Check the source the cleaning may have missed

A house can still smell of dog after cleaning because the source is somewhere the cleaning has not reached: a bed filling, sofa cover, rug, damp towel or old accident spot. A freshly mopped floor does not tell you whether those materials are clean and dry, or whether the room is being ventilated.

Start where the smell is strongest. Clean the relevant item according to its care instructions, treat accident spots with a suitable enzymatic cleaner, and keep the room’s ventilation working. Filtration can then supplement that routine; fragrance adds a chosen scent.

Find the source before cleaning the whole room again

Walk through the room and compare the dog’s usual resting places. Check the bed itself, the floor underneath it and the furnishings beside it. The most useful clue is a particular item or location where the smell is stronger.

These are starting points for investigation, not a diagnosis from smell alone. More than one source may need attention.

Clean the whole bed, within its care instructions

A removable cover is only one part of a dog bed. Check whether the filling or inner cushion is washable too, and whether it needs a different method. If only the cover can be washed, do not assume the complete bed can go into the machine.

Remove loose hair before washing and use the temperature, detergent and drying method stated on the label. Give the bed enough space to dry properly before reassembling it. Putting a clean cover over a damp inner cushion leaves an unresolved problem.

Dogs Trust’s guidance on toileting in the house includes washing dirty bedding and using an enzymatic cleaner for previous accidents. A bed that cannot be cleaned satisfactorily may need advice from its manufacturer or replacement; repeated washing of the cover will not repair a damaged filling.

Include the fabrics and floor around the bed

Check the throw on the sofa, the rug beside the bed and the towel used after walks. Work through the items your dog actually uses rather than washing every fabric in the house.

Vacuum accessible hair and debris, including seams and the area underneath movable furniture, using attachments suitable for the surface. Wash removable covers only where their care labels allow. For upholstery or rugs, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning method and check any cleaner’s material compatibility and spot-test instructions.

Do not soak a non-washable item to chase a smell. If the odour seems to be within upholstery, carpet backing or an inaccessible layer, ask the item’s manufacturer or an appropriate cleaning professional about the next step.

Treat old accidents as a separate cleaning job

A urine patch needs attention at the patch, even if the surrounding floor looks clean. Dogs Trust recommends an enzymatic cleaner, often sold as a pet odour remover, for urine and other accident spots. Its cleaning advice explains that residual scent can draw a dog back to the same area.

Choose a product intended for the accident and suitable for the material. Follow its preparation, application, contact-time and drying instructions rather than using an improvised dilution or adding another cleaner. Check beneath a removable rug where practical. If a deposit has reached a layer you cannot access, surface treatment may not finish the job.

For repeated accidents, use Dogs Trust’s linked toileting guidance to address the behaviour and routine as well as the cleaning. Aircare does not remove a deposit from carpet or stop a new accident.

Keep ventilation part of the routine

After source cleaning, keep using the ventilation provided for the room. Check that vents are clear and follow the instructions for any mechanical ventilation system. Open a suitable window when practical, alongside the home’s existing ventilation provision.

The GOV.UK existing home ventilation guide, which applies to England, advises leaving trickle vents open and unblocked and following system instructions. Ventilation exchanges indoor and outdoor air; it does not wash a blanket or clean an accident spot.

Check the result once everything is dry

Return the cleaned, dry items to their usual places and reassess the same locations during the next normal household routine. Note whether the strongest smell has moved or whether one item still stands out. That gives you a useful next action instead of another full-room clean with no clear target.

A short note can be enough: “bed cover washed; inner cushion still smells” or “rug treated; check backing”. If the room is better until one particular blanket returns, investigate that blanket. If the smell comes back without an obvious fabric or accident source, review the room’s ventilation and any overlooked items.

Understand what activated carbon adds

Activated carbon can hold some gas molecules on its surface through adsorption. It has a finite capacity, so performance depends on the compounds present, the amount and condition of the carbon, and air passing through it. The EPA’s technical summary of residential air cleaners describes these limits.

This gives carbon filtration a role alongside cleaning and ventilation. The EPA’s home air-cleaner guide also places filtration alongside source control and ventilation. Fragrance has a separate role: it changes the scent you notice, rather than cleaning the bed or removing an accident deposit.

Where EcoBreeze Residential fits

EcoBreeze Residential passes room air through a prefilter and activated-carbon media before adding your selected fragrance. Consider it after the source checks, for everyday freshness in the space where you use it. Follow the supplied placement guidance and keep the airflow clear.

The Residential Starter Kit costs £160 including VAT and includes the device, stand, UK power supply and plug, and first filters and chosen fragrance. A replacement Care Package costs £22 including VAT. Visit EcoBreeze Residential for the system, care guidance and testing context.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my carpet still smell of dog after vacuuming?

Vacuuming removes loose material but may leave a deposit in the carpet, backing or a layer underneath. Check whether the smell is general or concentrated at an old accident spot. Follow the carpet’s care instructions and use a compatible enzymatic cleaner for accidents; seek cleaning advice if the affected layer is inaccessible.

What temperature should I wash a dog bed at?

Use the temperature on the bed’s care label. The cover and filling may have different instructions, and some fillings are not washable. Dry all washable parts as directed before putting the bed back together.

Will an air freshener get rid of a dog urine smell?

Fragrance changes the scent in the room but does not clean the urine deposit. Dogs Trust recommends an enzymatic cleaner for accident spots. Deal with the material first, following both the cleaner’s label and the item’s care instructions.

How often should I clean the dog’s bedding?

Use its care instructions and your household’s needs rather than a universal schedule. Check it after accidents or wet walks and when it becomes dirty or smells. Having a spare washable cover can make it easier to allow the cleaned one to dry fully.
